The United Nations said civilian suffering in Lebanon has reached an “unprecedented” level, as Israeli forces ramped up their offensive in Beirut and other southern suburbs, in a bid to take down Iran-backed Hezbollah. The strikes on Beirut are the first after several days of calm. Lebanese state media reported that Israeli jets caused two sonic booms over the capital. The latest strikes come after Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said he was opposed to a “unilateral ceasefire”. Sarah Coates reports from Tel Aviv.
