The United States’ Taiwan Relations Act has marked its 45th anniversary. The legislation allows economic, cultural and military exchanges between the two sides even after Washington severed formal diplomatic ties with the island. But as Victoria Jen explains, even with the legal framework, it is not always a smooth ride for self-ruled Taiwan.
