MELBOURNE : Highlights of the fourth day of the Australian Open on Wednesday (all times GMT):

1257 PAUL DEFEATS NISHIKORI

Former semi-finalist and American 12th seed Tommy Paul survived a first-set scare to beat Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-7(3) 6-0 6-3 6-1, setting up a third-round match with Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena.

1255 DRAPER FIGHTS BACK TO BEAT INJURED KOKKINAKIS

Home favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis was serving for the match in the fourth set but British 15th seed Jack Draper staged a comeback to win 6-7(3) 6-3 3-6 7-5 6-3 as a shoulder injury affected the Australian’s serving arm in the four-and-a-half-hour battle.

Draper is set to face another Australian, Aleksandar Vukic, in the third round.

Olympic gold medallist and German second seed Alexander Zverev beat Pedro Martinez 6-1 6-4 6-1 to set up a third-round clash with Briton Jacob Fearnley.

Croatian 18th seed Donna Vekic survived a first-set scare to beat lucky loser Harriet Dart 4-6 6-0 6-2, setting up a third-round clash with Russian 12th seed Diana Shnaider.

Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic handed American 22nd seed Sebastian Korda a second-round exit with a 6-4 3-6 2-6 6-3 7-5 win.

French 14th seed Ugo Humbert beat Lebanese qualifier Hady Habib 6-3 6-4 6-4 to set up a third-round clash with compatriot and 20th seed Arthur Fils.

1055 MENSIK STUNS RUUD

Czech 19-year-old Jakub Mensik stunned Norwegian sixth seed Casper Ruud by beating him 6-2 3-6 6-1 6-4 in the second round.

1017 KOSTYUK DOWNS NIEMEIER

Ukrainian 17th seed Marta Kostyuk brushed aside Germany’s Jule Niemeier 6-3 6-0 to reach the third round.

1003 FILS DEFEATS HALYS

French 20th seed Arthur Fils beat fellow Frenchman Quentin Halys 6-2 4-6 7-6(2) 7-5 in the second round.

0945 GAUFF BEATS BURRAGE

American third seed Coco Gauff defeated Briton Jodie Burrage 6-3 7-5 to enter the third round where she faces Canada’s Leylah Fernandez.

0745 TOMLJANOVIC KNOCKED OUT

Russian 12th seed Diana Shnaider beat Australian wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4 7-5 in front of the home fans at John Cain Arena to move into the third round for the first time in her career.

Play remains suspended on the outer courts.

0615 DJOKOVIC INTO THIRD ROUND

Ten-times champion Novak Djokovic beat Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria 6-1 6-7(4) 6-3 6-2 under the roof at Rod Laver Arena.

Djokovic became only the second player, after Serena Williams, in the Open Era to notch up 150 wins in Grand Slam singles matches after turning 30-years-old.

0512 PLAY SUSPENDED ON OUTER COURTS

Rain forced organisers to suspend play on the outer courts, while the roof was closed at Rod Laver Arena.

0453 BORGES BEATS THOMPSON IN STRAIGHT SETS

Unseeded Portuguese Nuno Borges knocked out Australian 27th seed Jordan Thompson 6-3 6-2 6-4 at John Cain Arena and has earned a third-round match against third seed Carlos Alcaraz.

0406 OSAKA FIGHTS BACK TO BEAT MUCHOVA

Twice champion Naomi Osaka was blown away by Karolina Muchova in the opening set but produced a stirring comeback to win 1-6 6-1 6-3 and move into the third round.

“It took everything, I left everything out there on the court,” said Osaka, who lost to Muchova in their last two meetings.

0405 MACHAC BATTLES PAST OPELKA

Tomas Machac beat big-serving Reilly Opelka 3-6 7-6(1) 6-7(5) 7-6(4) 6-4 in a five-set match where both players converted only one break point each.

Opelka sent down 40 aces and 83 winners but the American also made 89 unforced errors and 16 double faults.

0336 ALCARAZ CRUISES INTO THIRD ROUND

Third seed Carlos Alcaraz brushed aside Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0 6-1 6-4 in 81 minutes to march into the third round. Alcaraz got off to a blistering start and never looked back, winning the first nine games before Nishioka could even get on the board.

0315 DJOKOVIC BREAKS FEDERER’S GRAND SLAM MATCHES RECORD

Novak Djokovic has now played 430 singles matches at Grand Slams as the 37-year-old Serbian broke the record set by Roger Federer.

0258 ANDREEVA SURVIVES UCHIJIMA SCARE

Russian 14th seed Mirra Andreeva saved a match point in the final set tiebreak to beat Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima 6-4 3-6 7-6(8) and reach the third round.

Andreeva, 17, is looking to improve on her last-16 run on her Melbourne Park debut last year.

0230 SIEGEMUND UPSETS OLYMPIC CHAMPION ZHENG

Germany’s world number 97 Laura Siegemund knocked out Olympic champion and fifth seed Zheng Qinwen 7-6(3) 6-3 at the John Cain Arena. The 36-year-old sank to her knees after the win as Zheng became the first major casualty in the women’s draw.

“I knew I had to play more than my best tennis with nothing to lose, so I told myself to swing free… I know I can play well and I wanted to show that,” Siegemund said.

0218 SABALENKA ADVANCES WITH SECOND-SET COMEBACK

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka beat Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-3 7-5 to reach the third round but the defending champion had to make a comeback from 5-2 down in the second set.

Bouzas Maneiro saved two match points but could not prevent the Belarusian from moving on.

0205 PEGULA MOVES INTO THIRD ROUND

American seventh seed Jessica Pegula beat Elise Mertens 6-4 6-2 to advance to the third round in just 71 minutes at Margaret Court Arena.

Earlier, Olga Danilovic became the first player to reach the third round after she upset 25th seed Liudmila Samsonova 6-1 6-2.

0016 PLAY BEGINS AFTER MORNING SHOWERS

Play began at John Cain Arena with Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen taking on Laura Siegemund, as rain in the morning delayed proceedings on the other courts.

The temperature was 23 degrees Celsius (73.4 F) on the fourth day of the championships with more showers predicted.

Aryna Sabalenka continues her title defence with a second-round clash against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, while Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka are in action later in the day.
