Germany is poised to commit €1 trillion for defence and infrastructure to revamp its military and flagging economy. This seismic spending shift is proposed by the parties hoping to form Germany’s next government. Standing in the way are the constitutionally enshrined state borrowing limits, known as the “debt brake”. To change that would require the approval of two-thirds of the lawmakers. That’s why the Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats are rushing to get the Bill passed now, because the new parliament will see enough far-right and far-left MPs, who could kill the Bill.
