Malaysian actor-director Syamsul Yusof and his first wife, actress Puteri Sarah Liyana, separately announced to media outlets on Tuesday (Apr 18) that they have failed to agree on their divorce terms.
The pair previously agreed to divorce after months of conflict with Apr 18 set as the date Syamsul was to pronounce the talak (divorce proclamation) on Puteri Sarah.
In an interview, Puteri Sarah’s lawyer Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader said: “Efforts to resolve their problem have not been successful. Therefore, I request that the court read the report of the Conciliation Committee involving both parties before taking appropriate action.”
The main points of contention include the mutaah (consolatory gift from a husband to his divorced wife) amount and Puteri Sarah’s decision to proceed with a civil suit against Ira Kazar – Syamsul’s second wife – and her family over their alleged breach of a previous court injunction.
Syamsul and Puteri Sarah offered differing accounts of the events that transpired – with Syamsul claiming on Instagram that Puteri Sarah’s team suddenly wanted a mutaah amount that was higher than what was previously agreed.
Puteri Sarah, on the other hand, claimed it was Syamsul who wanted a reduction in the mutaah amount.
The Syariah Lower Court has set May 25 as the date for the head of the Conciliation Committee to inform it of what happened during Syamsul’s and Puteri Sarah’s proceeding.
Syamsul and Puteri Sarah got married in March 2014 and have two children together. In January this year, the Mat Kilau director announced that he had secretly married actress Ira Kazar in Thailand, making her his second wife.
