The Istana will undergo “major restorations works” from early 2024, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) announced at its Committee of Supply debate on Mar. 6, 2023.
These works are to address deterioration due to age and environmental conditions, as well as update existing mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems.
They are also part of efforts to ensure that Singapore’s national monuments are preserved for future generations.
With its main building constructed between 1867 and 1869, the Istana also functions as a working Government building, in addition to being a venue for state events and community gatherings.

Open Houses for public
Members of the public can access the Istana five days a year, according to the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).
Open House days fall on the public holidays of Chinese New Year, Labour Day, Hari Raya Puasa, National Day and Deepavali.
Programmes typically include tours, musical performances from students and youths, face painting and sand art workshops, and visitors can even bring their own picnic mats to lounge the afternoon away.
These activities, however, were suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic, although one can still explore the garden grounds in addition to the main building.
