Construction of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is proceeding smoothly and looks set to be completed by end-2026.

This was according to previous reports in January 2023.

Providing an update, MRT Corp has now shared photos on Feb. 28 of the progress of the construction works.

The photos showed the construction of RTS Link Marine Viaduct, with approximately an 870m crossing across the Straits of Tebrau.

The RTS Link will connect Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru city to Woodlands in Singapore.

Some 10,000 passengers per hour each way will likely ease traffic congestion on the Causeway.

RTS Link tunnels will connect to a viaduct running 25m above the Straits of Johor.

MRT Corp is the developer and owner of the civil infrastructure for the Malaysian section of the rail project.

According to reports of the progress of the construction, nearly 30 per cent of the project has been completed as of January 2023.

    Background

Singapore and Malaysia signed an agreement on July 30, 2020 to resume the project to build the 4km mass rapid transit system.

A bilateral ceremony, attended by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his then-Malaysian counterpart Muhyiddin Yassin, was held on the Causeway to mark the occasion.

This was after the project was suspended a number of times following the Pakatan Harapan coalition government’s rise to power in Malaysia in 2018.

The project is estimated to cost RM10 billion (S$3.25 billion), with Singapore bearing 61 per cent of the cost.

The JB-Singapore RTS project had originally been slated for completion in 2024.

Malaysia and Singapore governments had signed a bilateral agreement to build the link in 2018.
