A tragedy occurred on the evening of Feb. 26 when a brother and sister drowned at a public swimming pool in Ipoh, Perak in Malaysia.
Malaysian Chinese media Sin Chew Daily reported that an eight-year-old boy was drowning in the pool, and his nine-year-old sister jumped in to try to save him.
Unfortunately, she drowned as well.
Sister tried to save her brother
According to New Straits Times, Ipoh district police chief Yahaya Hassan said that he received information regarding a drowning incident at around 6:10pm on Feb. 26.
Yahaya said in a statement on Feb. 27: “They were taken to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in an ambulance and were pronounced dead by medical staff,”
“The post-mortem confirmed that the cause of death was drowning,” he added.
Police investigating
Yahaya has said that police investigations were ongoing to confirm if the children were there by themselves or accompanied by parents, according to Oriental Daily.
“The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(A) of the Child Act 2001 (Act 611) for negligence or neglect of responsibility by exposing a child in a manner likely to cause physical injuries,” he adds.
He also advised everyone, especially parents and guardians to keep close supervision of their children to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.
