SINGAPORE: An unexploded World War II ordnance was removed on Friday (Jun 28) from a construction site in Ang Mo Kio, where the future Teck Ghee MRT station will be built.
The police said the war relic was discovered during excavation works at a site along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 towards Marymount Road.
They were alerted to the case at about 5.45pm and worked with the Singapore Armed Forces’ (SAF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit to determine that the item was an unexploded WWII ordnance.
“It was assessed to be safe for handling and has been moved away for disposal. No danger was posed to the public,” the police said.
CNA has contacted the Ministry of Defence for more information on the removal of the war relic.
Last September, thousands of people living and working in parts of Upper Bukit Timah vacated their buildings for hours while experts dealt with a 100kg World War II aerial bomb that was discovered at the construction site of the Myst condominium.
The SAF’s bomb disposal team had assessed at the time that it was unsafe to move the war relic and carried out a “controlled disposal” on site.
Experts told CNA last year that it is not surprising to find unexploded war relics in random parts of Singapore as bombing during World War II was “highly inaccurate”.
CNA has also contacted the Land Transport Authority for more information. Teck Ghee MRT station will be an underground station along Phase 1 of the Cross Island Line. Construction for this phase of the project began in January 2023.
