Bisi Bele Bath is a delicious one-pot rice dish from Karnataka, and you can make it at home with this easy recipe by chef Aruna Vijay.
For Spice powder 1 tsp oil 2 tbsp chana dal 2 tbsp coriander seeds- 1 tsp urad dal 2 tsp sesame seeds ¾ tsp fenugreek seeds 2 tsp poppy seeds 1 tsp cumin ¾ tsp peppercorns 1 Cinnamon stick 3 Cardamoms 3 Cloves 1 Marathi moggu 8 Dry Red chillies 1 sprig curry leaves ¼ cup desiccated coconut ¼ tsp asafoetida powder ½ tsp turmeric powder
For tempering 1 tsp mustard seeds 8-10 cashews Curry leaves ½ cup shallots ½ tsp turmeric powder Salt 1 cup veggies of choice ½ cup tamarind water 1 cup rice ½ cup dal 4 cups water
1. In a pan, add oil with all ingredients. 2. Roast on slow flame till aromatic.
3. Once cool, grind to make a powder.
4. Then, in a pressure cooker add ghee, mustard seeds, curry leaves, cashews and shallots and sauté it for 2 mins. 5. Then add veggies of choice along with turmeric powder, prepared masala and salt and mix well.
6. Lastly, add ½ cup tamarind water and cook for 5 mins
7. Add soaked rice and dal & add water. 8. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles. 9. Once the pressure settles, open the cooker and add more hot water, if required, to adjust the consistency.
Drizzle ghee, garnish it with boondi, and enjoy your Bisi Bele Bath!
