A US Department of Justice report released to Congress has found that president-elect Donald Trump would have been convicted of illegally trying to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election, if not for his recent re-election victory in 2024. The findings concluded that Mr Trump had engaged “unprecedented criminal effort” to hold onto power. The president-elect has described Mr Smith as deranged, claiming that the findings are fake. The report was unveiled after a US federal judge appointed by Mr Trump ruled that it can be released. It comes, though, in the wake of his electoral success, which resulted in criminal trials against him being quashed. Benji Hyer has more.
